Federal officials in Ottawa have ordered TikTok’s Canadian business to be dissolved, citing national security concerns.
ByteDance, the Chinese company behind the wildly popular TikTok social media platform, has been accused of stealing individual’s data and spying on foreign governments.
Consequently, the federal government has ordered the dissolution of TikTok Technology Canada Inc. that has been established in the country by ByteDance.
However, Canada’s federal government stopped short of ordering individual people to stay off the social media app that specializes in short-form videos.
In a news release, Canada’s government said that it is not blocking Canadians’ access to the TikTok app or their ability to create content.
The federal government began a national security review of TikTok in September 2023 and has banned the TikTok app from all mobile devices used by federal workers.
ByteDance is privately held. Its stock does not trade on a public exchange.
